Bathroom Safety Checklist for Aging in Place

Shower & Tub

Shower or tub has a low or no threshold to step over
Grab bar installed inside the shower or tub, anchored into wall blocking (not just drywall)
Grab bar installed at the entry point, for balance while stepping in or out
Shower floor has a slip-resistant surface, not just a rubber-backed bath mat
A built-in or portable shower seat is available if standing for the full shower is tiring
Handheld showerhead within easy reach while seated
Water temperature is controlled by an anti-scald valve
Water heater is set to 120°F or lower to help prevent scald injuries
Electrical outlets near the sink are GFCI-protected (test button trips and resets properly)

Grab bar installed beside the toilet, anchored into blocking
Toilet seat height is comfortable to sit down on and stand up from without straining
Clear, unobstructed path to the toilet, day or night

Doorway is wide enough for a walker or wheelchair, if one is used or may be needed
Path from the bed or hallway to the bathroom is clear of clutter and cords
Frequently used items (soap, towels, medication) are stored within easy reach, without needing to bend or stretch
Bath towel or robe is within reach of the shower exit, so there's no wet, unsteady walk to fetch one
Faucet and door handles are lever-style rather than twist knobs, for an easier grip

Non-slip footwear or slippers are worn to and from the bathroom
A phone, medical alert device, or intercom is reachable from inside the bathroom
Household members know your bathroom routine well enough to notice if something seems off
Medications have been reviewed with a doctor or pharmacist for side effects like dizziness
Bathroom door swings outward (or is a pocket door) and can be unlocked from outside in an emergency
