What Is a Barrier-Free Shower?

A barrier-free shower is a step beyond curbless — it's designed to fully accommodate a wheelchair, with enough space to move freely, grab bars in the right positions, and a handheld showerhead for seated use.

More Than Wheelchair Use

Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, post-stroke recovery, and hip or knee surgery all benefit from a barrier-free shower — not just wheelchair users.

More Than Just Curbless

A barrier-free shower goes further than a standard curbless shower — it's designed from the ground up for wheelchair access, with the right floor space, grab bars, and fixtures. Not every curbless shower qualifies.

Beautiful, Not Institutional

Our barrier-free showers use the same premium porcelain panels and coordinated fixtures as any luxury bathroom. Accessible design and beautiful design are not in conflict.

Designed for Real Accessibility

Roll-In Capable

Our barrier-free showers accommodate manual and power wheelchairs, wheeled shower commodes, and rollators. A curbless entry and a 60″ turning radius option give wheelchair users genuine independence.

Grab Bar System

Grab bars on the back wall and both side walls give wheelchair users safe, independent movement. We block all three walls during installation so bars can be added or relocated later without touching the tile.

Premium Finishes

Porcelain wall panels and coordinated fixtures create a sophisticated shower in any bathroom. Accessible design and beautiful design are not in conflict — ours prove it.

What Goes Into a Barrier-Free Shower

Every element is designed for genuine accessibility — not just the appearance of it. Here is what we build into every project.

1

Dimensions: 36×36 vs 60×36

The minimum recommended barrier-free shower is 36″×36″ with a fold-down seat. For roll-in use (wheelchair enters and user stays seated), the minimum is 60″×36″. We always recommend the larger footprint when the bathroom allows it.

2

Proper Floor Slope

Too steep and wheelchair positioning becomes difficult; too flat and water pools. We verify the correct slope across the entire floor with precision leveling tools before any panel installation.

3

Grab Bar Placement

Bars positioned for safe entry and movement — on the back wall and both sides. We block all three walls so bars can be added or repositioned later without opening finished surfaces.

4

Controls & Showerhead

Controls positioned at a reachable height from the shower entry before stepping in. A handheld showerhead is included as standard so a seated user can direct water without standing.
