Search "best shower waterproofing system" and you'll get a dozen confident, contradictory answers in the first page of results. Every manufacturer says their product is the one to trust. Every tile forum has a thread where two experienced pros disagree. And somewhere in the mix is a photo of someone's rotted subfloor, torn open mid-renovation, as a warning to everyone else.

We install curbless and barrier-free showers across Texas, including Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Austin, San Antonio, and West Texas, and we get asked some version of "which waterproofing is actually best?" almost every week. The honest answer is that there isn't a single correct one. There are several systems that work extremely well when installed correctly, a couple of older methods that remain legitimate when done right, and a failure pattern that shows up again and again regardless of which product was in the box, usually because a corner, a seam, or a drain connection got rushed.

This guide pulls together manufacturer documentation, industry standards (ANSI and the Tile Council of North America's installation handbook), U.S. plumbing code requirements, a from-scratch materials price comparison we built and priced ourselves, and the recurring themes you'll find echoed across tile-trade forums and DIY communities. Our goal isn't to sell you on one brand. It's to give you enough real information that you can make your own informed call, whether you're hiring a pro or doing it yourself.

Quick answer, if you're short on time

Schluter KERDI/KERDI-BOARD, Wedi, GoBoard, and quality liquid membranes (RedGard, Hydro Ban, Mapelastic AquaDefense) are all capable of producing a durable, long-lasting shower assembly when properly designed, installed to spec, and maintained. The differences that actually matter:

  • Foam board (GoBoard, Wedi, Schluter KERDI-BOARD): the board is the substrate and the waterproofing in one product. GoBoard is our standard, baseline system at EverSafe. It's professional-grade, and per current retailer pricing, it runs less expensive per square foot than its direct competitor, Schluter KERDI-BOARD. Wedi offers dedicated prefabricated components for curbless showers and specialized steam-shower applications, and typically runs the most expensive of the three.
  • Sheet membrane (Schluter KERDI): one of the longest-established U.S. track records and the broadest accessory ecosystem. It's a strong option, but it's a waterproofing membrane, not a board, so it must be installed over a suitable solid backing/substrate approved for the application, which a membrane-only price doesn't include. Paired with an ordinary cement backer board, it's one of the least expensive routes in this guide.
  • Liquid-applied (RedGard, Hydro Ban, AquaDefense): the lowest coating-only cost in our sample comparison and the most forgiving on odd substrates, but less forgiving on technique than it looks, and also must be installed over a separate solid backing/substrate.
  • Traditional mortar bed + liner: a long-established shower-receptor method recognized by model plumbing codes when properly installed. Hot-mop systems are a separate traditional method still used in some regions where locally accepted or approved.

More important than brand: across every system, many waterproofing problems come back to critical installation details. Improperly treated corners and transitions, an incorrectly detailed drain connection, inadequate membrane coverage or thickness, and failure to test the completed waterproofing where required before it is concealed are the usual culprits. Get those details right, and installation quality becomes at least as important as the brand on the box.

Why waterproofing isn't a place to cut corners

Here's the thing nobody tells you when you're picking tile: the tile isn't what keeps your shower from leaking. Tile can be highly water-resistant on its own. Porcelain in particular has very low water absorption, and a glazed surface is close to impervious. But a tiled shower assembly should never rely on tile and grout alone for waterproofing: water works through joints and transitions over time, which is why the shower needs a properly designed waterproof layer behind or beneath the tile (a membrane, a coated board, or a liquid-applied coating) that most homeowners never see and never think about, right up until it fails.

And failures aren't rare or theoretical. Water damage and freezing account for roughly 27.6% of all U.S. homeowners insurance claims, with an average claim payout of about $13,954, and roughly 1 in 60 insured homes files a water-damage or freezing claim in a given year, according to the Insurance Information Institute.1

Mold remediation adds its own cost on top of that. Surface mold in a bathroom typically runs $500 to $1,000 to remediate, but a whole-project mold remediation involving hidden plumbing leaks averages around $2,300 and can climb into the thousands once cabinets, drywall, or subfloor have to come out.2

The code minimum isn't the same as "done right"

Model plumbing codes such as the IRC and IPC require the completed shower liner installation to be tested. The drain is plugged, and the receptor is filled with potable water to a depth of at least 2 inches measured at the threshold. The water is retained for at least 15 minutes with no evidence of leakage (IRC Section P2503.6 / IPC 312.9).3 Because model codes are adopted and sometimes amended locally, verify the applicable requirement in your jurisdiction. That 15-minute period is the model-code minimum test duration, not a guarantee. A flood test doesn't waterproof anything by itself, it just gives you a chance to catch a leak before it's hidden behind tile. Many installers leave a test in place longer than the code minimum when site conditions and the waterproofing manufacturer's instructions allow it. The key requirement is that the membrane has fully cured per its technical data sheet before the test begins.

The tile industry has its own standards for this, too. For bonded waterproofing membranes used in tile assemblies, look for products meeting ANSI A118.10 and install them according to the manufacturer's instructions and an appropriate method in the current TCNA Handbook.4 The current TCNA Handbook recognizes multiple legitimate shower-receptor methods, including traditional liner/mortar-bed assemblies and bonded waterproof membrane assemblies. The correct method depends on the substrate, waterproofing system, drain and shower configuration.5 None of this is exciting reading, but it's the difference between "looks fine for the first two years" and "still fine at year twenty."

What actually goes wrong (and why)

We're not telling you this to scare you. We're telling you because understanding common failure causes is what lets you (or your contractor) avoid them. A rotted subfloor discovered during a renovation or a home inspection is a recurring, well-documented story in home-renovation and house-flipping communities online, and it commonly traces back to one of a handful of causes, not to "waterproofing" as a concept failing.

Here are several common installation problems that can lead to shower waterproofing failures:

  1. No waterproofing layer at all. Tile set directly onto cement board with nothing underneath it, historically common in older homes, and it still happens on budget remodels where waterproofing gets skipped to save a few hundred dollars.
  2. Corners, changes of plane and curb-to-wall transitions that were not detailed correctly. These areas must be treated according to the waterproofing manufacturer's instructions. Depending on the system, that may involve membrane banding, preformed corners, approved sealant, reinforcing fabric or a manufacturer-approved liquid-membrane detail.
  3. A drain-to-waterproofing connection that wasn't made per the manufacturer's approved detail. Modern systems handle this differently: an integrated bonding flange adhered with thinset (Schluter's Kerdi-Drain works this way6), a clamping-ring connection, a factory-attached membrane, or a sealant system. Whichever it is, this is one of the most critical transitions in the whole assembly and should never be improvised.
  4. Liquid membrane applied too thin, or tiled over before it fully cured. Coverage thickness and cure time aren't optional steps, and cure time varies a lot by product. Some rapid-cure formulations are flood-test-ready in well under an hour under good conditions, while standard formulations can need most of a day. Always follow the specific product's current technical data sheet rather than a rule of thumb.
  5. Skipping the flood test. A flood test doesn't waterproof anything by itself, but if nobody checks for a leak before the tile goes on, a defect that would have been an easy fix becomes a hidden problem, often not discovered until a stain appears on a ceiling below or a floor starts to feel soft, months or years later.
  6. Mixing components from different manufacturers without confirming compatibility. This can create compatibility issues and may affect warranty coverage. Check the written requirements of each manufacturer before combining products.

Proper waterproofing represents only one portion of the overall shower-remodel cost, while repairing a failed assembly after tile and finishes are installed can require demolition and reconstruction of the shower and surrounding materials, on top of the disruption of living without a functioning bathroom for weeks. It's the cheapest expensive mistake in a remodel to avoid.

How a waterproofed shower assembly actually works

Regardless of which system you choose, every tiled shower is built in the same basic layers: framing/subfloor, a substrate board (cement board, foam board, or drywall, which varies by system), the waterproofing layer itself (a sheet membrane, waterproof board or properly applied liquid membrane, the layer that actually stops water reaching your framing), thinset mortar, and finally the finished tile. What changes between systems is which layer does the waterproofing, and how it's applied: a sheet membrane bonds on top of the substrate, a foam board has waterproofing built into the board itself, and a liquid membrane is painted or rolled directly onto the substrate surface.

The 7 main types of shower waterproofing systems

Here are seven major approaches used in today's shower market, ranging from modern bonded waterproofing systems to traditional methods and non-tile alternatives. DIY-friendliness is rated on a simple scale, from a lot of forgiveness for a first-timer to "hire someone who's done this before."

1. GoBoard waterproof foam boardEverSafe's baseline system

GoBoard is a rigid, waterproof foam substrate board (a polyisocyanurate foam core), marketed by Johns Manville as up to 80% lighter than traditional cement board and tested to meet ANSI A118.10 waterproofing requirements, so the substrate and the waterproofing membrane are one step instead of two. It's the system we use as our standard, baseline waterproofing on most of our tiled shower installs (our large-format composite panel system, covered later in this guide, is a separate non-tile option). It's a genuinely professional-grade, code-compliant system, not a corner-cutting one. Its most direct competitor is Schluter's own board product, KERDI-BOARD, and per current retailer listings for both, GoBoard runs meaningfully cheaper per square foot than KERDI-BOARD, so it's generally the least expensive of the premium board systems on materials, not just on installed cost. We reach for Schluter or Wedi on specific projects (an unusual drain, unique accessory, or unusual curbless geometry) not because GoBoard is a lesser product, but because those systems have accessories built for that particular situation.

Schluter offers two distinct products worth telling apart. KERDI is a polyethylene or fleece-backed sheet membrane bonded to a substrate with thinset mortar, creating a continuous waterproof layer across walls, floor, and corners using purpose-made preformed pieces. Because it's a membrane, not a board, it must be installed over a suitable solid backing/substrate approved for the application (cement backer board is the common choice, and the one we used in our sample comparison below). KERDI-BOARD is Schluter's separate waterproof building panel, a foam board that combines the tile substrate and waterproofing layer in one product, the same way GoBoard does. KERDI-BOARD is the fairer, apples-to-apples comparison to GoBoard, and current retailer pricing for both puts KERDI-BOARD at a noticeably higher cost per square foot. The plain KERDI membrane route, paired with an ordinary cement backer board, remains Schluter's least expensive path, and one of the cheapest routes in this whole guide, but it isn't a board product and isn't the fair comparison to GoBoard or Wedi.

Like GoBoard, Wedi bakes the waterproofing into the substrate board itself. Wedi offers dedicated prefabricated components for curbless showers and specialized steam-shower applications, which is where it tends to shine relative to GoBoard. Our own sample pricing for a complete Wedi kit, including its Fundo pre-sloped floor base, came in higher than either GoBoard's or Schluter KERDI-BOARD's complete kit for the same size shower.

A liquid rubberized coating is rolled or brushed directly onto the substrate in multiple coats, curing into a seamless waterproof membrane. This is the lowest coating-only cost in our sample comparison and arguably the most forgiving on irregular or existing substrates, since there's no sheet to cut and fit. Like KERDI membrane, it's a coating, not a board, so it still must be installed over a suitable solid backing/substrate approved for the application. That add-on cost isn't reflected in the coating price alone. Flood-test timing varies significantly by product and conditions. Current LATICRETE HYDRO BAN XP literature allows flood testing after approximately 2 hours when fully cured at 70°F/50% RH, while colder or wetter conditions require longer. HYDRO BAN Quick Cure has published substantially shorter timing, and MAPEI Mapelastic AquaDefense currently specifies approximately 12 hours before flood testing. Always use the current technical data sheet for the exact product being installed.

A traditional mortar-bed-with-liner pan uses a CPE or PVC sheet liner under a mud bed. Hot mop is a separate traditional method using layered roofing felt sealed with hot-applied tar or asphalt. The mortar bed and liner method is a long-established shower-receptor method recognized by model plumbing codes when properly installed. Hot-mop systems are a separate traditional method still used in some regions where locally accepted or approved. Modern bonded systems are often favored instead because they place the waterproofing closer to the tile surface, simplify several installation details, reduce the amount of saturated mortar in the assembly, and integrate more easily with proprietary drains and prefabricated components, but a properly executed traditional receptor is not inherently defective.

A factory-molded, pre-sloped, pre-waterproofed pan drops into the shower footprint, factory-engineered with a predetermined slope toward the drain. The supporting floor, elevations, perimeter transitions and drain connection still have to be installed correctly. These are an excellent option for curbless and zero-threshold showers because the pan's drainage slope is factory-engineered, reducing the amount of site-built slope work, though a site-built assembly can achieve the same result when detailed correctly. Laticrete's current Hydro Ban pan lineup spans its original Shower Pan and Shower Pan Kit alongside newer Pre-Sloped, Linear Pre-Sloped, and Modular Pre-Sloped options and a Rapid Custom Shower System for non-standard sizes, reflecting how much of this category has shifted toward factory-engineered solutions. Product lineups in this category change fairly often, so confirm current availability with the manufacturer or your distributor before specifying one for a project.

Worth including for contrast: not every waterproofing "system" involves tile at all. This is a broad category spanning everything from thinner acrylic or fiberglass shower surrounds, to thicker engineered composite or solid-surface wall panels, to porcelain slab systems, all of which use large-format wall surfaces that substantially reduce the number of joints compared with conventional tile. EverSafe's own system sits at the thicker, reinforced composite-panel end of this spectrum rather than a thin acrylic insert, and cost and durability vary meaningfully across the category, so ask specifically what any quote includes. Typical full installed remodel cost for an acrylic system runs roughly $8,000 to $13,000, per a third-party, acrylic-specific estimate, and isn't directly comparable to the materials-only waterproofing figures elsewhere in this guide.

Rather than blend vague market averages into one number, we priced a materials-only bill of materials ourselves for one clearly defined, apples-to-apples sample shower: a 36x60-inch curbed alcove, three walls waterproofed to 8 feet plus the floor (about 145 sq. ft. of combined surface), with a single point drain and no niche or bench. GoBoard's, Schluter KERDI-BOARD's, and Wedi's board prices are sourced from current retailer listings.7 RedGard's and Schluter KERDI membrane's totals below add our own estimate for the cement backer board (the solid backing/substrate we selected for this comparison) and mortar-bed floor materials those two products still need installed over. Without that addition, their sticker price only covers the coating or membrane, not a complete, ready-to-tile assembly, which would understate their real cost relative to the board systems' all-in kits. This is materials only. It doesn't include labor, tile, or fixtures, and a niche, bench, or linear drain would add to every system's total.

GoBoard vs. Schluter KERDI-BOARD: the fair comparison

A common mistake in cost comparisons (one this guide made in an earlier draft) is pricing GoBoard, a complete board, against Schluter's KERDI membrane, a thinner product that still needs a separate backer board. That understates KERDI's real cost and makes GoBoard look pricier than it is. The fair, apples-to-apples comparison is GoBoard against Schluter's own board product, KERDI-BOARD. Based on current listings for both at the same retailer, GoBoard runs meaningfully cheaper per square foot than KERDI-BOARD. In our sample shower, that puts a complete GoBoard kit at roughly $810 versus roughly $1,235 for a comparable KERDI-BOARD kit.7 Because GoBoard also combines the substrate and waterproofing into one board, it can reduce installation steps compared with a separate substrate-plus-membrane assembly. That combination, lower material cost and less labor, is why we use GoBoard as our baseline system.

None of these is the objectively "best" system. They solve overlapping problems differently. Schluter has one of the longest-established reputations and the deepest accessory catalog, which matters if your shower has a niche, a bench, an unusual drain, or anything else that benefits from a matched part existing off the shelf. Its board product, KERDI-BOARD, is the direct comparison to GoBoard, and it runs pricier per square foot based on current retailer listings for both. Wedi's foam-first approach and preformed sloped bases make it a natural fit for curbless and steam shower projects specifically, at a premium over GoBoard. GoBoard is generally the least expensive of the three board systems, on materials and on installed cost, which is why it's our standard, baseline system rather than a niche "budget" pick.

The honest takeaway, and one you'll hear from experienced tile setters regardless of which brand they personally prefer: installer familiarity and installation quality matter more than which of these three you choose. Installer familiarity with the chosen system can be as important as brand selection. An installer deeply experienced with one approved system may be a better choice than someone using another system for the first time.

Spend time in tile-trade communities (forums, Facebook groups, subreddits like r/Tile and r/HomeImprovement) and a few themes come up over and over, regardless of which specific thread you're reading:

A word on "horror story" photos

You've probably seen the photos: a first-time homeowner pulls up flooring during a renovation and finds a rotted subfloor, or a home inspection turns up soft, water-damaged framing behind a shower wall. These stories circulate widely in renovation and house-flipping communities precisely because they're a genuinely useful warning, not because they're common exaggerations. They commonly trace back to one of the causes covered above: no waterproofing layer, an unsealed corner, or a drain connection that wasn't made per the manufacturer's approved detail, not to waterproofing as a concept being unreliable. The lesson isn't "be afraid of your shower." It's: where required and applicable to the system, flood test the completed waterproofing before it is concealed.

Curbless & barrier-free showers need extra rigor

Curbless and zero-threshold showers remove the physical curb that would otherwise contain water inside the shower footprint. That's exactly the point for accessibility and aging-in-place design: removing the curb eliminates one common physical barrier and potential trip point. But it also means, as installers in this space put it, "the slope is the curb." Without a raised edge to physically contain water, the floor itself has to do the work of directing water to the drain.18

Model plumbing-code shower-liner provisions use a slope of 1/4 inch per foot (2%) toward the drain.18 The final assembly must also follow the waterproofing, drain and receptor manufacturer's requirements and applicable local code.

The drain-to-waterproofing connection deserves its own mention, because it's one of the most critical transitions in the entire assembly. How it's made varies by system: Schluter's Kerdi-Drain uses an integrated bonding flange that the Kerdi membrane is adhered to with thinset mortar; other systems use a clamping-ring connection, a factory-attached membrane, or a sealant-based detail.6 Whatever your system uses, that connection must be made exactly per the waterproofing and drain manufacturer's approved detail. This is not a place to improvise.

There's a safety angle here that's easy to miss: the entire reason to build a curbless shower is usually to remove a fall hazard for an older adult or someone with mobility limitations. CDC injury-surveillance data found an estimated 234,094 nonfatal bathroom injuries per year among people 15 and older, with falls accounting for 81.1% of those injuries and bathing/showering activities alone accounting for over a third of them, and older adults are hospitalized for these injuries at meaningfully higher rates than younger adults.19 A curbless shower is meant to make that risk go away. A curbless shower with sloppy waterproofing just trades one hazard (the curb) for a different one, a slick, mold-prone, potentially rotting floor, which defeats the purpose of building it barrier-free in the first place.

A note for Texas homeowners

Waterproofing quality matters a bit differently depending on where you live, and Texas has a couple of regional factors worth knowing about. Slab-on-grade construction is common across many Texas markets, including DFW, Houston, Austin and San Antonio. Many Texas regions have expansive soils that can contribute to foundation and slab movement. That kind of slab and substrate movement is primarily a structural and tile-assembly issue rather than a waterproofing issue on its own. ANSI A118.10 addresses bonded waterproof membranes; ANSI A118.12 addresses crack-isolation membranes that help a tile assembly tolerate substrate movement.20 For example, LATICRETE HYDRO BAN and HYDRO BAN XP are currently listed by LATICRETE as meeting or exceeding both ANSI A118.10 and A118.12,20 but not every waterproofing membrane does. If slab movement is a known concern for your home, ask specifically whether your chosen system (or an added crack-isolation layer) is rated for A118.12, not just A118.10.

Add in the long, humid summers along the Gulf Coast and central Texas, and you've got favorable conditions for mold growth if a leak does go undetected behind a wall. None of this means Texas showers need some exotic special system. It just means it's worth asking your installer directly whether the specific product they're proposing addresses both waterproofing and, if relevant to your home, crack isolation.

How to choose the right system for your project

Is ceramic tile itself waterproof?+

Tile can be highly water-resistant on its own. Porcelain in particular has very low water absorption, and a glazed surface is close to impervious. But a tiled shower assembly should never rely on tile and grout alone for waterproofing: water works through joints and transitions over time, which is why the shower needs a properly designed waterproof layer (a membrane, a coated board, or a liquid-applied coating) behind or beneath the tile. If that layer fails, water can get past the tile regardless of how well the tile itself was installed.

What is the best waterproofing system for a shower?+

There isn't one universally "best" system. Schluter KERDI or KERDI-BOARD, Wedi, GoBoard, and quality liquid membranes (RedGard, Hydro Ban, Mapelastic AquaDefense) are all capable of producing a durable, long-lasting shower assembly when properly designed, installed to the manufacturer's instructions, flood-tested, and correctly detailed at corners and drains. What is the best waterproofing system for a curbless or zero-threshold shower?+

How much does it cost to waterproof a shower?+

It depends heavily on the system and the shower's size, and market-wide "installed cost" estimates online vary widely and aren't always comparing the same scope. One common mix-up: comparing GoBoard, a complete board, against Schluter's KERDI membrane alone, which doesn't include the separate backing that membrane still needs. The fairer, apples-to-apples comparison for GoBoard is Schluter's own board product, KERDI-BOARD. For a clearly defined example, a 36x60-inch shower with three walls to 8 feet plus the floor, about 145 sq. ft. total, a complete, ready-to-tile materials assembly runs roughly $470 for a liquid-applied membrane, $825 for KERDI membrane over a cement backer board, $810 for a complete GoBoard kit, $1,235 for a complete KERDI-BOARD kit, and $1,266 for a complete Wedi kit. GoBoard is generally the least expensive of the board systems on both materials and installed cost, which is why we use it as our standard, baseline system. Labor is typically the larger share of total cost and varies significantly by region and installer, so get an itemized quote for your specific project.

Do I need to flood test my shower pan before tiling?+

Yes. Under model-code provisions such as IRC P2503.6 and IPC 312.9, a completed shower liner installation is filled with potable water to at least 2 inches measured at the threshold and retained for at least 15 minutes with no evidence of leakage. Local adoption and amendments can vary, and manufacturer cure requirements must be satisfied before testing. That 15-minute period is the model-code minimum test duration, not a guarantee: a flood test doesn't waterproof anything by itself, it just gives you a chance to catch a leak before it's hidden behind tile. Many installers leave a test in place longer than the code minimum when site conditions and the manufacturer's instructions allow it, as long as the membrane has fully cured per its technical data sheet first.

Is GoBoard as good as Schluter KERDI-BOARD?+

Yes. GoBoard and KERDI-BOARD are both genuinely professional-grade, code-compliant waterproof foam boards, not a lesser or purely-DIY alternative to one another. Both are tested to meet ANSI A118.10 waterproofing requirements, and both combine the substrate and the waterproofing in a single panel. Based on current retailer listings for both, GoBoard runs meaningfully cheaper per square foot than KERDI-BOARD, so for a comparable project, GoBoard is generally the less expensive of the two on materials, not just on installed labor. That's why we use GoBoard as our standard, baseline board system on most tile installs. Schluter's advantage is a longer U.S. track record and a deeper accessory ecosystem for unusual niches, benches, or drains, a real reason to choose it on a specific project, not evidence that GoBoard is a step down.

Can I waterproof a shower myself as a DIY project?+

Liquid-applied membranes and foam board systems are the most commonly DIYed waterproofing methods, and both are sold at major home improvement retailers with installation guides. Liquid membranes in particular look simple to apply but are less forgiving than they appear, since required coverage thickness and full cure time are critical and easy to under-deliver without realizing it. Corners, changes of plane, curbs, penetrations and drain connections are critical waterproofing details where installation errors can lead to failure, and a mistake stays hidden behind tile until it becomes an expensive problem. Curbless showers, linear drains, and steam showers are generally better left to an experienced installer.

What causes shower waterproofing to fail?+

Common causes include: no waterproofing layer installed at all, corners and curb-to-wall transitions that weren't properly sealed or detailed, a drain connection that wasn't made per the manufacturer's approved detail, liquid membrane applied too thin or tiled over before it fully cured, skipping the flood test (which doesn't cause a failure but means nobody catches one before it's hidden), and mixing products without confirming manufacturer compatibility, which can create performance problems and may affect warranty coverage.

Is hot-mopping still a good waterproofing method for showers?+

Traditional mortar-bed-and-liner and hot-mopped shower pans remain recognized installation methods with decades of field history, and they're still used in some regions, particularly where local contractors and inspectors are most familiar with them. Modern bonded systems (sheet membrane, foam board, liquid-applied) are increasingly favored because they place the waterproofing closer to the tile surface, simplify several details, and integrate more easily with proprietary drains and prefabricated components, but a properly executed traditional receptor is not inherently defective. One commonly cited criticism of hot mop specifically is VOC off-gassing during and after installation.
