HISA Grants: A Simple Guide

HISA stands for Home Improvements and Structural Alterations. It is money the VA gives to veterans to help pay for home changes needed for a disability — like a walk-in shower. Here is how it works, in plain language.

How Much Money Can I Get?

This is a one-time, lifetime total — not a yearly amount. Once you use it up, it's gone.

$6,800

If your disability is connected to your military service, or rated 50% or more

$2,000

If your disability is not connected to your service

What Does It Pay For?

✅ Covered

  • Roll-in or walk-in showers
  • Grab bars and safety rails
  • Bathroom sinks and counters you can reach
  • Ramps to get in and out of your home
  • Plumbing or electrical changes needed for medical equipment

🚫 Not Covered

  • Hot tubs or spas
  • Outdoor decks or patios
  • Brand new home construction
  • Portable (non-permanent) ramps
  • General home repairs not related to a disability

Steps to Apply

Follow these 8 steps in order.

  1. 1

    Talk to your VA doctor

Tell your VA doctor you need a walk-in shower for your health. Ask them to write a prescription that explains why you need it (your diagnosis and the medical reason).

  2. 2

    Get a price quote

Ask a bathroom remodeling company (like EverSafe Showers) for a written price quote. It should list the labor, materials, and total cost.

  3. 3

    Take one photo

Take one color photo of your current bathroom or shower, before any work is done.

  4. 4

    Renting? Get a signed letter

If you rent your home instead of owning it, ask your landlord to sign a notarized letter allowing the changes.

  5. 5

    Fill out VA Form 10-0103

This is a short form — your name, Social Security number, address, phone number, and the name of the contractor. It takes about 5 minutes.

  6. 6

    Turn in your papers

Bring or mail everything together to the VA health care facility where you get your care: the signed form, doctor’s prescription, price quote, photo, and landlord letter (if renting).

    Find your VA facility
  7. 7

    Wait for approval

The VA reviews your application. They may visit your home to check. If approved, you can also ask for half the money in advance, before the work starts.

  8. 8

    Get your shower installed

Once approved, hire your contractor to do the work. EverSafe Showers can install your new walk-in shower in as little as 2 days.
