Walk-In Showers for Seniors in Galveston, TX

Plenty of people come to Galveston to retire on purpose. They want the beach walks, the slower pace and a house a few blocks from the water. What tends to change the plan is not the island but the bathtub. Climbing over a tub wall onto a wet surface gets harder each year, and a fall in the bathroom is often what turns a happy retirement into a conversation about moving.
A walk-in shower helps keep that conversation off the table. We replace the tub or high-curb stall with a low-threshold or curbless entry, a slip-resistant floor, a seat and grab bars set into solid blocking. Most installs take about two days, and adult children who live off the island are welcome to join the free in-home assessment by phone or in person.

Retiring on the Island, and Staying
About 20% of Galveston residents are 65 or older, according to the Census Bureau, a noticeably higher share than in the Houston suburbs across the causeway. Some are lifelong islanders. Many others moved here after careers elsewhere, often into a house they bought for its porch or its view rather than its bathroom.
Galveston has an unusual advantage for anyone getting older: a major academic medical center on the island. Texas voters picked Galveston for the state university's medical department in 1881, John Sealy Hospital took its first patient in 1890, and the University of Texas Medical Branch opened the following year. UTMB is home to the oldest medical school in Texas, and since 1995 its Sealy Center on Aging has focused on research and outreach for older adults.
Having that care close by is one reason retirees feel comfortable staying. But a hospital nearby does nothing about the daily step over a bathtub wall. The shower is the place where most older adults in their own homes face real risk, and it is the fixture families most often put off changing.
Galveston County runs senior community centers with meals, exercise, outings and transportation, and a good walk-in shower supports that kind of independent, social life. Someone who still drives to lunch with friends or takes a morning walk along the seawall should be able to shower on their own, without waiting for a visit from family.
Our CAPS-certified team plans each shower around the person who will use it: their height and reach, whether they use a cane or walker, and which side they favor getting in and out. Island houses vary a great deal in age and layout, so we measure the actual room before recommending anything.

Frequently Asked Questions
My parent lives in Galveston and I live in Houston or out of state. Can I be involved?
Yes. Many of these projects are arranged by adult children. You can join the free in-home assessment in person or by phone, and we will walk you both through the layout, the seat and grab-bar placement and the schedule before anything is decided.
Can my parent stay in the house while the walk-in shower is installed?
Usually, yes. Most installs take about two days and stay within the space the old tub or stall already uses. If the home has a second bathroom, daily life carries on with little disruption. We confirm the timeline during the assessment.
Is a curbless shower or a low-threshold shower better for an older adult?
It depends on the person and the room. A curbless entry works best for a wheelchair or walker. A low-threshold entry, usually an inch or two, suits many people who walk on their own and can be simpler in some older bathrooms. We recommend one after seeing the space.
Do I need a permit for a walk-in shower in Galveston?
It depends on the scope of the work. We confirm requirements with the City of Galveston for your specific project and handle any permitting that is needed.
