Tub-to-Shower Conversions in Garland, TX

Garland's 1960s and 70s houses were built around a tub that is now forty to sixty years old.

In a Garland house built during the 1960s or 70s, the tub alcove has usually seen a few coats of caulk and paint but very little real change. A conversion finally swaps that tub for a walk-in shower.

The new shower goes into the space where the tub was. Your plumbing wall stays put and the job does not spread through the rest of the house.

A Factory Town That Doubled Every Decade

Today the Texas legislature calls it the Cowboy Hat Capital of Texas, a title it received in 2013, but Garland began as a political compromise. It was created in late 1887 as a compromise between two rival settlements, Duck Creek and Embree, and named for U.S. Attorney General Augustus H. Garland. For a long time it was a small place, with 2,233 residents in 1940 according to the Handbook of Texas.

After World War II, manufacturing changed that. Kraft Foods bought the old Continental Motors plant, and the city grew to 10,571 people by 1950, 38,501 by 1960 and 81,437 by 1970. By 1980 it had 138,857 residents, more than sixty times its 1940 population.

The homes built for those workers and their families still make up most of Garland. Census data shows the 1970s as the city's largest decade of construction at almost 27% of housing units, with the 1960s adding about 20% more. Taken together, around 55% of Garland's housing was built before 1980, and the median year built is 1978. That makes Garland older on paper than Dallas, Plano or Irving.

Bathrooms from those decades usually have a steel or cast-iron tub in a five-foot alcove, surrounded by ceramic tile, often in colors that date the house to within a few years. Some later or remodeled baths have a fiberglass surround fitted over the old tile. Either way, the grout and caulk are usually the first things to go, and they hold water in exactly the places you cannot see.

About 12% of Garland residents are 65 or older, which is below the national share, so this is not a city of retirees. It is a city of older houses, and every one of those tubs still asks whoever lives there to step over a high, wet edge every day. Removing the tub fixes that and also gets rid of the tile and grout that are hardest to maintain.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Garland home still has the original 1970s tile around the tub. Does all of that come out?

The tub comes out completely, and the tub surround is replaced with large-format wall panels that have no grout lines. We look at your specific walls during the in-home assessment and explain exactly what will be removed before work begins.

What if there is water damage behind the old tile?

In a bathroom this old it is not unusual to find some once the tub and tile are out. If we find something, we show it to you, explain the options and get your approval before going further.

Will I need a permit from the City of Garland?

We confirm requirements with the City of Garland for your specific project and handle any permitting needed on your behalf.

How long does the conversion take?

Most conversions are completed in about two days by our own crews. We confirm the timeline for your bathroom during the free assessment.
