Grand Prairie homeowners tend to call about one of two very different bathrooms: a decades-old alcove tub in a postwar house, or a newer tub-shower combo in a home built within the last twenty-five years.

Either way, the fix is the same idea. We take the bathtub out entirely and build a walk-in shower with a low or zero threshold in the space it leaves behind.

An Aircraft-Plant Boomtown With Houses From Every Decade Since

Grand Prairie started as a railroad stop. Its post office opened in 1874 under the name Dechman, and it took the name Grand Prairie in 1877 to match what the railroad had been calling it since 1873. By 1940 it was still a town of 1,595 people.

World War II changed that almost overnight. North American Aviation opened a plant nearby that employed 5,000 people by 1941 and eventually 38,500 at its peak. By 1945 the town's population had climbed to roughly 18,000, and after the war Chance Vought moved into the old plant. Grand Prairie kept growing: 30,386 residents in 1960, 50,904 in 1970, and more than 197,000 by the 2020 Census.

Because growth never really stopped, Grand Prairie's housing spans an unusually wide range of years. About one in six homes was built before 1970, while the single biggest building decade was the 2000s. The median home dates to 1991, which sits right between the two. In practical terms, two neighbors a few miles apart in Grand Prairie can own houses built forty or fifty years apart, with very different bathrooms behind the front door.

That spread matters in the bathroom. A house from the 1950s or 60s usually has a narrow alcove with a steel or cast-iron tub and tile that has been regrouted more times than anyone remembers. A home from the 1990s or 2000s is more likely to have a one-piece fiberglass tub-shower unit, sometimes with a separate garden tub in the primary suite. Removing each one involves different demolition, and we plan for whichever one you have.

Only about 11% of Grand Prairie residents are 65 or older, less than the national share. The case for a conversion here is mostly practical: the tub wall is the highest step in the house, and it is a lot easier to remove it on your own schedule than after someone slips. With a median home value around $272,000, it is also a project that tends to make sense next to what the house is worth, rather than a full gut remodel.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Grand Prairie house is from the 1950s. Can you remove an old cast-iron tub?

Yes. Older steel and cast-iron tubs are heavy and usually set in tile, so they take more work to remove than a fiberglass unit, but we take the whole tub out rather than covering it. Once it is gone we can see the framing and plumbing behind it and build the new shower around what is actually there.

We have a newer Grand Prairie home with a fiberglass tub-shower. Is the process different?

The goal is the same, but a one-piece fiberglass unit comes out differently than a tiled-in tub. We confirm what your bathroom has during a free in-home assessment, so the plan and timeline are based on your house rather than a guess.

Is a permit required for a tub-to-shower conversion in Grand Prairie?

That depends on the scope of the work. We confirm requirements with the City of Grand Prairie for your specific project and handle any permitting needed.
